Learning vocabulary is an important part of any GRE-Verbal preparation strategy.
Questions in the Antonym, Analogies, Reading section & sentence completion section directly OR indirectly test your vocabulary levels.
In sentence completion section you are expected to know the meaning of the presented words in order to identify which correctly fills in the blank of a sentence.
Also do remember that many Reading Comprehension questions depend on your knowing the meaning of particular words as well. The passages you have to read in the section are likely to have difficult words. If you are not familiar with them it could slow down your reading time and decrease your understanding of the passage.
Finally, skillful use of vocabulary is one of the criteria used to evaluate your GRE Essay.
So increasing your vocabulary should be a goal that you pursue from day one of your GRE preparation efforts.
